Course Description: The Hmong people have a history of inter-generational persecution, poverty, and a lack of education and resources. Without a home-country, the Hmong people carry complex-trauma into their cultural practices and family/relationship dynamics. These struggles are what make the Hmong unique from the general Asian population. The Hmong desire for having a place of recognition within society in the midst of facing the threat of a dying people-group and culture. This workshop is a comprehensive in-depth assessment of the Hmong American community, their societal struggles, and their mental health issues. Furthermore, participants will be given the opportunity to discuss difficult topics such as: what are healthy Hmong cultural practices verses dysfunctional ones and why are these practices normalized? This workshop will also point to the Asian cultural roots of Confucianism as an appropriate form of treatment. Moreover, this course will also invite participants to become multilingual in their ability to treat patients, as they also become more self-aware of their own cultural biases along with the biases of others. This workshop will advocate for cultural humility, recognizing the value in each culture's strengths, utilizing them in the appropriate opportunities so as to endorse collaboration across all race and ethnic groups. Finally, effective and culturally-competent applicational strategies will be introduced and discussed.
